The Alaska Court System (ACS) is recruiting for a Clerk of Court II in support of the Petersburg Trial Court. The selected applicant will plan, implemen! t, direct, and monitor all non-judicial activities of the court and directly manage and supervise one Deputy Clerk. Regular duties of this position will include:
TRIAL COURT MANAGEMENT AND SUPPORT
Provide professional technical support, leadership, and supervision of the various functions of the clerk's office including processing criminal, civil, small claims, minor offense, probate, and children's cases;
Serve as probate registrar; process marriage certificates and marriage license applications; compile monthly report for vital statistics;
Assure efficient caseflow management, integrity of court records, files, and accounts; effective jury management, front counter, collection and proper disbursement of fines, restitution, and other funds;
Analyze and prepare budget and supply requests; assure court rules and First District policies and procedures are followed;
Responsible for in-court duties; set up courtroom, check calendar, and review ! files; operate recording equipment and log proceedings; open a! nd close court; swear in witnesses and jurors; receive and secure exhibits; prepare and distribute paperwork;
Work closely with Rural Court Training Assistant and judges to implement new procedures; attend court conferences, monthly first district clerk teleconferences, and training sessions as required;
Participate in district wide projects aimed towards problem-solving and improvement of courts; serve on statewide committees representing first district when requested.
HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Responsible for work allocation, preparing and updating position descriptions, recruiting, hiring, disciplining, training, and evaluating clerical staff; monitor compliance with required administrative and personnel rules and policies;
Train new employee; act as backup to cover all desks as required; maintain knowledge of court operations for back-up work and training;
Plan and conduct regular staff meetings; receive and respond to employee complaints and gri! evances; conduct investigations as necessary and follow grievance procedure.
DEPUTY MAGISTRATE DUTIES AND OTHER ASSIGNMENTS
Accept complaints, arraign defendants in misdemeanor and minor offense cases; conduct felony first appearances; set bail; sentence defendants; perform marriages; issue search warrants, emergency injunctive relief in domestic violence cases, summons, and arrest warrants;
Receive and respond to complaints from the general public, parties, attorneys, judges and others regarding Petersburg Trial Court; conduct investigations as necessary to resolve problems; serve as liaison for the court with state executive and legislative branch agencies and a variety of organizations on issues of mutual concern;
Attend to matters assigned by the Area Court Administrator, Presiding Judge, or other judicial officers, including personnel matters, special projects and committees, research, and special requests for information and assistance.
This is a f! lexibly-staffed position. When certified, the position will serve as De! puty Magistrate and will be re-classified to salary range 14 (minimum salary is $3,689.00 per month). To be appointed as Deputy Magistrate, the applicant must be at least 21 years of age, a United States citizen, and a resident of the State of Alaska for six months immediately preceding appointment.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or completion of a General Education Development (GED) certificate AND one year of general clerical, office, or retail work experience AND the ability to type at least 40 words per minute.
OR
Graduation from high school or completion of a General Education Development (GED) certificate AND Completion of 36 semester credit hours or 48 quarter credit hours of coursework from an accredited college AND the ability to type at least 40 words per minute.
