Customer Care & Relationships:
1. Creates, develops, and nurtures culturally appropriate interactions and connections with each other, customer-owners, and the community.

2. Demonstrates skill in interpersonal relationships is a priority for this position since the perception of the customer-owner as well as clinic staff must be that the laboratory staff is interested in attending to their needs.

3. Receives all telephone calls and visitors in a friendly manner.

4. Provides assistance to customer-owners in a caring, and helpful manner to ensure customer-owners and other contacts receive care and assistance in a timely and efficient manner.

5. Maintains quality, safety and infection control standards.

6. Performs phlebotomy procedure as needed.

7. Demonstrates strong oral, written an! d interpersonal skills.

Communications & Teamwork:!
1. Shares and receives information, opinions, concerns, and feedback in a supportive manner.

2. Works collaboratively by building bridges, and creating rapport with team members within departments and across the organization.

4. Assists laboratory staff in daily tasks when needed and performs other duties as assigned.

  • Evaluates and processes specimens received for analysis to determine the suitability and usability of the specimen.
  • Identifies discrepancy and notifies the clinic for recollection of specimen/s if necessary. Verifies correct specimen labeling and correct paperwork submitted.
  • Ensures specimens are distributed to each department of the clinical laboratory.
  • Processes the requested analysis, ranging from routine to complex, in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Assists clinic! al staff in training on how to collect specimens, etc. to ensure quality of the specimens obtained and customer-owner satisfaction.
  • Provides assistance with the lab package to hospital staff.

1. Makes meaningful improvement to services, program, and processes and/or organizational effectiveness that create new value for customer-owners and employees.

2. Assists with the development of in-house protocols for new procedures.

Workforce Development Skills & Abilities:
1. Seeks out additional learning opportunities to continue to develop the technical and professional skills needed now and in the future.

2. Performs quality assurance review for centrifuge preventive maintenance, to ensure the smooth operation of the laboratory.

3. Maintains inventory control to assure adequate supplies and reagents needed for operation.

  • Supports computer information systems b! y receiving, processing, and making sure that the labs are ordered prop! erly in the correct encounter.
  • Assist in maintaining all record keeping systems in compliance with established procedures.
  • Recognizes, identifies and resolves problems and issues that arise without direct supervision.
4. Demonstrates the knowledge of quality control principles sufficient to maintain and advise on action relative to quality control concepts and correlation of laboratory results.

5. Demonstrates the knowledge and understanding of instrument technology sufficient to monitor mechanical and technical operation and locate and correct malfunctions.

6. Demonstrates the knowledge of 1974 Privacy Act is required as use of customer-owner record is an integral part of the position and privacy of individuals must be protected to the fullest.

QUALIFICATIONS:
SCF programs are established for the purpose of serving a primary population comprised of Alaska Natives who are affiliated with the Cook Inlet Regio! n Inc. (CIRI), and Alaska Natives and American Indians within SCF’s geographical service area. Employees should have a thorough understanding of the cultures and the needs of the CIRI members, and of the general culture and needs of Alaska Natives and American Indians. Such knowledge is critical in order to ensure the achievement of the mission and vision of SCF: working together with the Native community to provide the best services with Native staff who value the family and family wellness as the heart of the Native community.

1. High School Diploma or GED.

2. National Certification as a Phlebotomist or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.

3. One year healthcare experience or demonstrated proficiency as an administrative Support II at Southcentral Foundation.

Additional Qualifications for Laboratory Assistant II: Meets all requirements of Laboratory Assistant I in addition to the following:

1. Two (2) years’ ex! perience performing Laboratory Assistant duties or demonstrated profici! ency as a Laboratory Assistant I at Southcentral Foundation.

2. National Certification as a Phlebotomist.

Working Environment:
  • Employee may be exposed to: wet or humid non-weather (under 1/3 time); work near moving mechanical parts (to 2/3 time); exposure to bloodborne pathogens (over 2/3 time); hazardous waste (over 2/3 time); fumes or airborne particles (to 2/3 time); toxic or caustic chemicals (to 2/3 time); extreme cold non-weather (under 1/3 time); extreme heat non-weather (under 1/3 time); vibration (under 1/3 time).
  • Noise level: Moderate noise (i.e. business office with computers and printers, light traffic).
Physical Demands:
  • Position requires: stand (over 2/3 time); walk (to 2/3 time); sit (under 1/3 time); use hands to finger, handle or feel (over 2/3 time); fumes or airborne particles (over 2/3 time); reach with hands and arms (over 2/3 time); climb or balance (under 1/3 time); stoop, k! neel, crouch, or crawl (under 1/3 time); talk or hear (to 2/3 time).
  • Weight lifted or force exerted: Up to 10 pounds (over 2/3 time), Up to 25 pounds (to 2/3 time), Up to 50 pounds (under 1/3 time).
  • Special vision requirements: Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), Distance Vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), Peripheral Vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point). Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships). Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
