The Office of Public Advocacy is seeking to fill a non-attorney guardian ad litem (GAL) position in the Anchorage Civil Section. The section provides GAL representation for children when appointed by the cour t, primarily in child protection proceedings and private custody disputes. The GAL advocates for the best interests of the child and provides recommendations to the court to enable the court to make the best possible decision in the case.
Candidates should possess the knowledge, skill, experience, training, or education that allow them to:
- conduct independent, thorough and impartial investigations into the child’s situation
- understand and appreciate different cultures and family situations
- communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
- develop a positive rapport with children, parents, social workers, Tribes, teachers, and other professionals and volunteers involved in children’s lives
- be self-motivated and adaptable
- organize time efficiently to balance significant simultaneous demands
GALs are required to complete initial training and orientation. For a detailed description of a GAL’ s duties, please refer to Alaska Child in Need of Aid Rule 11 and Alaska Civil Rule 90.7.
