The Juneau Office of the Public Defender Agency has an opening for a flexibly staffed Investigator I/II/III position . The Public Defender Agency’s mission is to provid! e constitutionally mandated legal representation to indigent clients appointed by the court.
This position primarily conducts investigative activities related to criminal defense cases and assists attorneys in obtaining and evaluating information and evidence, enabling them to provide effective legal representation.

The duties include, but are not limited to : -Interviewing clients and witnesses -Reviewing police reports, records and interviews -Obtaining copies of audio and video tapes -Subpoenaing witnesses and records -Contacting clients and/or witnesses -Conducting research on a variety of issues -Testifying in court. -Preparing demonstrative aides to be used at trial. -Accessing database systems (APSIN/ACOMS) to locate clients, witnesses, and victims.

**NOTE** In order to be granted access to the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) and Alaska Corrections Offender Management System (ACOMS), the individual who is selected for thi! s position will be required to pass a background investigation! and may be fingerprinted. Full disclosure of ALL past criminal convictions (both misdemeanor and felony) at the time of application is required. Convictions may lead to disqualification due to the requirements necessary to access these systems.

Minimum Qualifications:
Investigator I-$3431.00
Graduation from high school;
AND
Two years of experience in process service, collections or similar activities; or personal counseling and guidance activity which involved the gathering and analysis of facts.

Substitution:
1. Experience as an investigator may substitute for the required experience on the basis of one month's investigative experience for two months of the basic requirement.

2. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college with a major in pre-law, criminal justice, police science, social science (or similar titles such as sociology), or psychology may be substituted for one year of the required work experience! .

Special Requirements: Willingness to travel and/or work irregular, unusual hours as required by the investigations.

Special Note:
Some positions in this class may require eligibility for commission as a special officer of the Alaska State Troopers and/or a background investigation.

Investigator II-$4207.00/mo.
One year of investigative experience as an Investigator I with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college with a major in pre-law, criminal justice or closely related major where investigative techniques, and evidence gathering and preservation techniques are a substantial portion of the curriculum may be substituted for one half of the required investigative experience.

Investigator III $4846.00/mo .
One year o! f investigative experience, preferably including both civil and criminal cases, as an Investigator II with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the I, II, or III level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at Level I, promotion to the Level II will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
