The Department of Law, Office of the Attorney General, Child Protection Section, is recruiting for a Paralegal I/II (Flexibly staffed) position in the Fairbanks office. Key responsibilities include: Organizing, indexing, reviewing, purging, summarizing, and controlling large collections of documents and exhibits used in complex litigation;
Factual, historical, and legislative research;
Preparing various written documents including research summaries, document analyses, and investigation results;
Drafting or preparing legal pleadings and documents including routine discovery and affidavits;
Legal research;
Assisting with investigations including location of witnesses and conducting informal interviews;
Assisting attorneys in trial and administrative proceedings. The department is recruiting for candidates who qualify at both the entry and full working level of the job class (Paralegal I or II). The actual appointment level will depend upon the background and experience level of the successful candidate. Successful candidates may be eligible for promotion to the higher level upon completion of the training period. The successful candidate should ! have the following:
Familiarity with litigation requiremen! ts and processes
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, time management, and computer skills

Minimum Qualifications:
Paralegal I
Three years of clerical or technical experience in a law enforcement or law office environment. Experience should have included performance of case research and/or preparation of routine legal documents. The required experience includes such work as Law Office Assistant I or Criminal Justice Technician with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

OR

Certification from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved state paralegal training and education program.

OR

Graduation from an Associ! ate of Arts program in paralegal, criminal justice or legal studies.

OR

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and certification in paralegal studies from a recognized program.

OR

Three years in any combination of post secondary education from an accredited college, and clerical or technical experience in a law enforcement or law office environment. Experience should have included performance of case research and/or preparation of routine legal documents. The required experience includes such work as Law Office Assistant I or Criminal Justice Technician with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere (3 semester hours or 4 quarter hours equal 1 month of experience).

Paralegal II
One year of experience as a Paralegal I, Victim/Witness Paralegal I, or Criminal Justice Technician II with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

OR

One year of study at an accredited school of law.

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in paralega! l, criminal justice, or legal studies.

Additional Required Information:
FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Paralegal I or Paralegal II level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at Level I, promotion to the Level II will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
