Responsible for consulting with customer-owners on matters concerning the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Through training! (traditional and contemporary) and experience, develops and implements culturally relevant strategies appropriate to the perceived needs of the customer-owners.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Outline of Essential Job Responsibilities/Functions to Include but Not Limited to:

Customer Care & Relationships:
Creates, develops, and nurtures culturally appropriate interactions and connections with each other, customer-owners, and the community.
Serves as a member of the customer-owner’s multidisciplinary treatment team to evaluate the customer-owner’s immediate health needs and suggest and/or apply traditional treatment as indicated as an adjunct to care. Consult with appropriate treatment staff regarding customer-owner’s progress and needs.
Reviews with the customer-owner the complete treatment history and suggest areas in which traditional healing practices and/or collaborative care are indicated. Focus will be holistic ! in nature with emphasis on prevention and health maintenance. ! These treatment strategies may involve a wide spectrum of services that will complement, supplement, and enhance the customer-owners existing treatment plan. Provide the following treatments with skill and understanding of the customer-owner’s needs:

  • Healing hands
  • Healing Touch
  • Prayer and Blessing
  • Songs and dance.
  • Education on cleansing and purification.
  • Alaska Native Traditional Healing Garden education and resource.
  • Culturally sensitive supportive counseling, e.g., family advocacy, dealing with end of life issues, grieving, issues of meaning and relationship to one’s environment, spiritual wellness, etc.
  • Healing practices not presented here require authorization by the attending physician.
Must refrain from practices that could be considered more invasive traditional practices such as poking, body or tissue penetration of any kind, and genital contact.
Provides, at the requ! est of customer-owners or providers, culturally relevant consultations including, but not limited to:

  • Customer-owner education regarding treatment plans and/or medications.
  • Customer-owner status regarding the course of the treatment plan.
  • The relationship of the treatment plan to the customer-owner’s traditional cultural practices and beliefs.
Communications & Teamwork:
Shares and receives information, opinions, concerns, and feedback in a supportive manner.
Works collaboratively by building bridges, and creating rapport with team members within departments and across the organization.
Excellent oral presentation skills.
Ability to listen and respond effectively to sensitive inquiries.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary treatment team.

Improvement & Innovation:
1. Makes meaningful improvement to servi! ces, program, and processes and/or organizational effectiveness that cr! eates new value for customer-owners and employees.

2. Participates in the development, evaluation, and presentation of training programs related to traditional healing practices and implement as directed by traditional healing staff.

Seeks out additional learning opportunities to continue to develop the technical and professional skills needed now and in the future.
Takes responsibility for all work activities and personal actions by following through on commitments.
Participate in on-going review of customer-owner satisfaction and quality related to cultural activities provided through ANMC and/or SCF. Maintains legible treatment records in a form required by SCF.
Knowledge of contemporary health practices and associated procedures.
Ability to maintain quality, safety and infection control standards.

QUALIFICATIONS:
SCF programs are established for the purpose of serv! ing a primary population comprised of Alaska Native people who are affiliated with the Cook Inlet Region Inc. (CIRI), and Alaska Native and American Indian people within SCF’s geographical service area. Employees should have a thorough understanding of the cultures and the needs of the CIRI members, and of the general cultures and needs of Alaska Native and American Indian people. Such knowledge is critical in order to ensure the achievement of the mission and vision of SCF: working together with the Native community achieve wellness through health and related services.

High School Diploma or GED
Advanced level of knowledge regarding the culture and traditional practices of Alaska Native people.
Experience and acceptance as a native healer in providing traditional practices. Currently practicing as a traditional native healer (tribal doctor).

Working Environment:
  • Employee may be exposed to: exposure to bloodborne pathogens (un! der 1/3 time); hazardous waste (under 1/3 time).
  • Noise level: ! Moderate noise (i.e. business office with computers and printers, light traffic).
Physical Demands:
  • Position requires: stand (over 2/3 time); walk (under 1/3 time); sit (under 1/3 time); use hands to finger, handle or feel (over 2/3 time); reach with hands and arms (over 2/3 time); talk or hear (over 2/3 time).
  • Weight lifted or force exerted: Up to 10 pounds (over 2/3 time), Up to 25 pounds (over 2/3 time), Up to 50 pounds (over 2/3 time).
  • Special vision requirements: Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships). Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
  • Additional physical demands: employee may be required to work holidays, evenings, weekends, and nights; the employee is able to work under physically and emotionally stressed conditions.
