DEPARTMENT: Equal Rights Commission
HOURS OF WORK: 8-5 p.m. Monday - Friday
LOCATION OF WORK: City Hall, 632 W. 6th Ave

Example of Duties:
First point of contact between the public, Anchorage Equal Rights Commision (AERC) staff, business leaders, Municipal personnel, and attorneys in person, by telephone, or email. Maintain all investigative files in an organized manner, including preparing and filing communication logs, complaints, entries of appearance, correspondence, and evidence (such as typed copies of witness interviews, memoranda of conversations, and documentation from parties). Respond to all walk-in, telephone, and other inquiries from the public. Use knowledge of Title V of the AMC, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, housing laws, and other applicable laws to thoroughly examine concerns raised by potential ! complainants to determine jurisdiction and the basis and issue! for complaints. Draft and serve legal complaints. Identify any inquiries to the AERC and refer callers to appropriate resources. Complete and maintain a Microsoft Access database for each inquiry. Collect and analyze statistical data relevant to complaints filed with the Commission for internal and external reports. Prepare and present informational/educational programs related to discrimination, legal issues related to discrimination, and the AERC to private employers, attorneys, local agencies, schools, and labor unions. Attend local outreach events to educate the public about discrimination, legal issues related to discrimination, and the AERC. Use social media and other forms of communication to market the AERC. Collect and analyze information and statistical data and provide information at weekly meetings to AERC staff. Manage day-to-day activities of the AERC office and provide administrative support to the Executive Director, Investigators, and AERC Commissioners.
Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Special Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Pre-Law, Marketing, Journalism or related Social Science. Must possess a valid State of Alaska Driver's License or the ability to obtain one by the time of hire. Must become a certified public notary within 60 days of hire. Other duties as assigned.

Substitute:
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and any combination of post-secondary education or progressively responsible experience in Management, Human Resources, Law, or related field may substitute for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis.

Notice:
Veterans who wish to be considered for interview preference as allowed in the Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach a copy of their DD Form 214 to the application. The DD Form 214 must show an honorable discharge. Minimum Qualifications of the position must be met for preference! consideration.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this ! position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted Background Check. A Background Check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

If selected for hire, must become a certified Public Notary within 60 days of hire.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a copy of the applicant’s Alaska Driver’s License and a current copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaskan driver’s license was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. The processing fee(s) are the responsibility of the selected applicant.

All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.
