We are currently recruiting for a Victim Witness Paralegal I/II (flexibly staffed) to join our team.
The Victim Witness Paralegal position provides support to prosecuting attorneys and guides victims and witnesses through the criminal justice process. This position performs duties such as:
Working with victims of crime to provide them with support, victims' rights information, referrals to other resources, and restitution information;
Informing appropriate persons as changes occur in criminal cases;
Initiating and responding to various requests for information and case correspondence;
Preparing legal documents;
Locating and interviewing victims and witnesses;
Handling the subpoena process and scheduling of witnesses to appear in court, and arranging for! their travel and accommodation when needed;
Preparing wit! nesses to testify in court;
Working with law enforcement, the courts, and other agencies in the criminal justice system;
Coordinating the appearance and payment of expert witnesses for trial;
Preparing trial notebooks and exhibits; and
Participating on community task forces as requested by the District Attorney
We are looking to hire someone with some of the following skills and experience. Please detail your experience in these areas in your cover letter.
Work experience in the field of domestic violence and sexual assault and/or working with crime victims and witnesses;
Knowledge of the criminal justice process;
Work experience in a private sector law office, a government law office, or court system;
Basic experience in creating and formatting documents in programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat X Pro;
Work experience explaining procedures and assisting people through a process;
Knowledge of crim! e victims' rights in Alaska;
Work experience independently creating, labeling, and organizing various materials and documentation;
Experience and ability to accomplish a high-volume of work that requires you to apply well developed organizational skills, regularly prioritize tasks, work effectively under pressure, apply sound judgment, and perform in a highly independent manner;
Ability to work well in a team, where cross training and coordination of unit duties with other employees are a must;
Ability to effectively communicate with individuals from various social, economic and cultural backgrounds; and
Ability to work effectively and calmly with individuals who are often emotionally distraught, upset or hostile.
Due to the nature of this position and the work performed in the office, interested persons must have the ability to tolerate exposure to coarse language, graphic pictures and detailed descriptions of sometimes horrific criminal acts. ! The incumbent must be willing and able to maintain the strictest of con! fidences with the information they will be exposed to and have access to. The incumbent must be able to pass a criminal background check.
On the job training is provided as well as opportunities to attend training conferences inside and outside of Alaska. Promotion within the position is granted when general duties are mastered.
Minimum Qualifications:
Paralegal I- $ 5,232
High School diploma or the equivalent and three years of experience at or above the journey clerical level in a law enforcement or law office environment, or in direct client contact in a human services advocate agency.
Substitution: Three years in any combination of post secondary education from an accredited college and experience at or above the journey clerical level in a law enforcement or law office environment, or direct client contact in a human services advocate agency. (3 semester hours or 4 quarter hours equal 1 month of work experience; Associate Deg! ree or a Paralegal Certificate equals 2 years of work experience; Bachelor’s degree equals 4 years of work experience.)
Paralegal II -$6,011
One year of experience as a Victim/Witness Paralegal I with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
High School diploma or the equivalent and four years of experience at or above the journey clerical level in a law enforcement or law office environment, or in direct client contact in a human services advocate agency.

S! pecial Note:
"High School Equivalent" includes a G.E.D., or com! pletion of any basic adult education course of 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 hours per week), or six months of work experience performing duties related to office or clerical support, or twelve months of work experience involving some routine tasks related to office or clerical support or highest grade of school completed plus amount of work experience which totals 12 years.
“Human services advocate agency†is defined as an agency that facilitates, coordinates, refers or provides direct support or crisis-intervention services to clients in need of assistance. Examples of such agencies are shelters, half-way houses, group homes, drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers, community mental health centers, sheltered workshops, psychiatric hospitals and outpatient clinics.
Special Requirement: Most positions require incumbents to pass a criminal background check to meet security requirements for using criminal record networks such as ASPIN, NCIC/NLETS. This re! quirement will be stated in the vacancy announcement.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the I or II level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Staring salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at Level I, promotion to the Level II will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
