JOB SUMMARY

Provides clinical leadership for patient care activities. Directs professional and non-professional nursing personnel; participates in staff development and evaluation of staff. Provides direct patient care.

Assists the manager: Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the delivery of patient care and all nursing activities for assigned units. Maximizes resource utilization and achieves organizational objectives through continuous improvement and process evaluation for cost effective care and quality clinical outcomes. Ensures compliance with established organizational, professional and accreditation standards and state/federal laws and regulations.

Summary of essential job functions (included but are not limited to the following):

Directing work of others to achieve desired outcomes through effective use of time, personnel, equipment, supplies and work systems.

Provides input for annual department plan and budgets; collaborates with manager to achieve department goals.

Coordinates efforts to develop work schedules based on unit staffing plans; coordinates with House Supervisor to adjust staffing based on changing unit/patient care needs.

Assists Nurse Director in interviewing, hiring, rewarding and disciplining staff. Participates in managing employee grievances.

Monitors and enables competency of staff in meeting job expectations and hospital/unit standards.

Directs resolution of clinical concerns. Collaborates with director to resolve occurrences, patient complaints and risk management issues.

Assumes responsibilities of Nurse Director as delegated .

  • Participates in other hospital committees and teams as appropriate.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required

Ability to use accurate, clear and concise oral and written communication

Ability to maintain effective working relationships

Ability to explain procedures and requirements to the public and employees

Ability to critically think and analyze and communicate findings

Ability to work independently and perform assignments with minimal direction

Ability to operate a variety of automated office equipment such as personal computers, copy machines, calculators, fax machine, multi-line telephone systems, etc.

Professional Requirements

Meets dress code standards; appearance is neat and clean.

Completes annual educational requirements

Wears identification while on duty

Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the facility

Minimum requirements (the following are minimal qualification necessary for entry into this classification)

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Graduation from accredited Nursing Program. Bachelor’s degree preferred or may substitute year for year experience.

License(s): Current State of Alaska Registered Nurse

Certification(s): BLS, ACLS

Experience(s): Minimum of four (4) years current critical care nursing experience. Proven competency in specialty area.
